Every student at the middle school took an online test with questions focused entirely on geography. The 50 or so top scoring students were then given a second test from which the 10 top scoring students were invited to compete in the school's GeoBee competition. The winner from this competition would go on to compete in the regional GeoBee, and then the national GeoBee.
Ella wasn't interested in competing AT ALL! She wasn't interested in geography AT ALL, but, feeling like she should try it, she decided to give it a go.
Parents of the students were invited to attend so Ryan and I went to watch Ella who said she would most likely get out on the first round. The questions they asked these kids were crazy, and specific, and nearly impossible to answer correctly. All of the kids did a great job, but after several rounds of questions, the last three standing were Ella and two other boys (one of which has won the GeoBee four years in a row).
After a few more rounds, one of the boys made it into the final round, with Ella and the other boy competing for the second spot. After several rounds of questions again, Ella missed her question and the other boy got his correct so he moved on to the final round. The two boys dueled it out and once again, the reigning GeoBee champion did it again and took first place, with the second boy coming in second and Ella coming in third.
It was a crazy competition and a fun one to watch. Way to go Ella on placing third!
